girl-next-door with swag. nerd cool. guitar prodigy with heart
It’s not just anybody who packs up everything and moves to the other side of the world on their own to follow their dreams… That is, unless you are Sabrina Soares.
In just over a year since booking herself a one-way ticket from Sydney, Australia, she has already generated a lot of buzz in the Toronto music scene. From busking the streets, to performing at notable festivals (including Kensington Jazz Festival, Indie Week Canada, Taste of the Danforth, Winterfolk Festival), Sabrina has already accomplished what other note-worthy artists around the city would take several years to do.
Most acclaimed yet, Sabrina was selected to participate in the Honey Jam Artist Development Program. The program fosters young women in music (notable alum includes Nelly Furtado, Melanie Fiona, and Jully Black) and concluded with a sold-out concert held at the Mod Club Theatre.
Mixing sincere and relatable diary-entry style lyrics with exceptional self-taught guitar playing, Sabrina’s debut EP “Plan A” is a hooky, hip-swiveling nod to pop, jazz, and the funky Brazilian rhythms that colour her unique heritage.
In her own words, Sabrina describes, “This record is about breaking through the constraint of needing a backup plan to do what it is you REALLY want to do. To let go of certain thoughts or memories holding you back; to have absolutely no idea where you’re going, yet willing to go beyond comfort to experience the ‘new’. That’s the Plan A."
Now in the process of recording her next record, Sabrina is incorporating more sounds of R&B, influenced by artists such as Lauryn Hill, Jhené Aiko, and Drake.
She’s only got a Plan A: she’s all in, and you will be too.
